Street Photography
Saturday 10 June
South Bronx area of New York City - 10am - 2 Hours
People, cafes, vendors, street merchants, buskers, historic buildings, art installations and much more. The power of observation underpins the art of great street photography. Learning to "see" interesting detail is a practised skill and we introduce you to easy methods that will open your photographer's eye and expose you to a world that is alive with detail. The most rewarding part of the class is learning how to approach interesting people and have them willingly pose for you.
We will also go over settings, focusing techniques and lens choices common to street photography to help us capture those random chance encounters.

Creating Photographic Blue Prints
Grade Level: Middle School (can be adapted for other grade levels)
1) Introduction:
Start by discussing the history and significance of cyanotype. Explain how it was used by scientists and artists in the past.
Show examples of cyanotype prints and discuss their unique blue color and white silhouette effect.
2) Materials and Safety:
Explain the materials used in the cyanotype process, including the light-sensitive paper and chemicals.
Discuss safety precautions, such as wearing gloves when handling chemicals and washing hands afterward.
3) Demonstration and Outdoor Setup:
Show a step-by-step demonstration of the cyanotype process, emphasizing the outdoor setup and precautions.
Go over the toning process of cyanotypes:
Darkening with Isopropyl Alcohol:
Isopropyl alcohol can be used to darken the blue color of a cyanotype print, creating a deeper or more sepia-toned effect.
Hydrogen Peroxide Toning:
Hydrogen peroxide can be used to create mid-tone effects in cyanotype prints, resulting in a range of warm to cool tones.
Whitening with Baking Soda:
Baking soda can be used to lighten or whiten the blue color of a cyanotype print, creating a more muted or sepia-like appearance.
4) Hands-on Practice:
Divide students into pairs or small groups.
Provide each group with cyanotype paper, cardboard/foam boards, and a selection of objects for making prints.
Instruct students to arrange objects on the cyanotype paper and secure them using the contact printing frame.
Take the groups outside to the designated area and expose the prints to sunlight.
After exposure, have students rinse the prints in water to stop the chemical reaction.
Allow the prints to dry.
5) Reflection and Sharing :
Give students an opportunity to share their prints with the class.
Ask students to reflect on their creative process and discuss what they learned about the cyanotype technique.
